Dog Obedience Training for Maggie The Boxer!

Maggie’s success story is one that brings a smile to my face because her difficulties are so similar to many of the dogs that I have trained. I am so proud of Peggy for following through with the obedience training. With all of the hard work she put in with Maggie – the results are astounding!

Maggie is a boxer who was suffering from extreme anxiety, while her owner, Peggy was struggling to deal with not only Maggie’s anxiety, but also her hyper personality! When I first met Maggie, I traveled to her house for the evaluation. When I knocked on the door, Maggie barked uncontrollably and when I entered the home, she jumped on the furniture and all over me! Peggy was unable to hold on to her or settle her down. Peggy put Maggie into her crate where Maggie showed her anxiety and began whining and panting excessively. Peggy explained that this was typical, and that it was difficult to have people over to her house because of Maggie’s behaviors.

Peggy and Maggie began my 7 week training program, utilizing an e-collar as our training tool. I worked one on one in their home, as this was where Maggie’s behaviors were their worst. The goals of training included basic obedience commands including holding a sit, laying down and staying until released, and a place command where Maggie learned to stay on a special mat until she could calm down enough to greet company. Additionally, Maggie learned to walk on a leash with proper behavior and developed off-leash control to be able to run on family property.

The dog obedience training commands were helpful to Maggie because they gave her something to focus on so that her anxiety and hyperactivity could lessen. Peggy learned to reward Maggie for her focus by giving her slow, calm praise, which helped Maggie’s racing mind to slow down! At the end of 7 weeks, Peggy was able to have company over and Maggie was able to accept company without running around and jumping by staying on her special place mat. She was also able to run off leash at a family property with Peggy being able to call her back at any time.

Peggy and Maggie’s success story is a prime example of how dog obedience training can redirect focus and energy, allowing for in-home and off leash control!
